Oxon Bird Pics Spring/Summer 2017

Ruddy Shelduck Farmoor Ruddy Shelduck, Farmoor

26 August 2017

Loafing around on the causeway in the north-western corner of F2.

An elegant un-ringed bird but surely too tame to be wild.

From the North Hide but very quiet otherwise/

12 August 2017

With the WWB Tern having departed, these was the only birds left within photo range. On the southern edge of FII, by the pontoons. Even the Ruddy Shelduck appeared to have departed.

As above.

22 July 2017

Good to see an autumn migrant! This bird spent most of its time some distance from the hide, but just once headed in my direction. It spent a while in a little bay , where it was obscured by vegetation before emerging which allowed just a few shots before it flew off.

Yellow legged Gull Yellow legged Gull, Pit 60

22 July 2017

I understand this bird has been kicking around for some time. At one point it found this tiny island and displayed its yellow legs so clearly even I (not a gull person!) could be certain of its ID!

Seemed worth a distant shot.
Common Tern Common Tern, Pit 60

15 July 2017

A very grey morning today at Pit 60, with heavy rain at times.

This tern settled briefly on one of the "Kingfisher" posts in front of the Langley Lane hide.

15 July 2017

Up to 5 Oystercatchers were much in evidence today, including this one briefly framed under the wooden "arch" on the island in front of the hide.

Moving very fast for flight shots with the 500f4 & x1.4TC!

15 July 2017

Very excited displaying was still taking place from time to time. I suspect the bird in front may be one of the juveniles as its slightly browner on the back?
Grey Wagtail Grey Wagtail, Upper Thames

10 June 2017

At the lock with what appears to be a small spider.
  Curlew Curlew, Upper Thames

10 June 2017

Some compensation for again not finding any sign of Clubtail dragonflies!

3 June 2017

Purring in its favourite oak tree - but not in the best light.
  Dunlin Dunlin, Farmoor

6 May 2017

Pretty cool, dull and quiet birdwise at Farmoor today. Along the causeway the only waders were 2 Dunlin, of which this was the brighter plumaged. This photo benefitted from a brief slightly brighter spell early on.

Another shot of the bird above.
Ring Ouzel Ring Ouzel, Cholsey Meadows

28 April 2017

This was a quick after-work visit that paid dividends! The bird was showing on the pools in this meadow which is now surrounded by new housing. I managed to get this image from the car, just before the bird was flushed by a dog walker!

A considerable improvement on my only other Rouzel photos from previous much more distant encounters in 2009 and 2016.
Song Thrush Song Thrush, Lark Hill, Wantage

14 April 2017

While I was intent on photographing the Wheatear (see below), at one point this Song Thrush suddenly appeared and came hopping towards me! Surprisingly, this is the first photo of this species on my website!
  Wheatear Wheatear, Lark Hill, Wantage

14 April 2017

Taken through the chain link that forms an impenetrable barrier around the underground reservoir.

Not sure what this prey item is. Any ideas?

Can't get too much of Wheatears - one of my favourites!
Lesser Whitethroat Shrike Meadow Lesser Whitethroat, Shrike Meadow, Farmoor

8 April

Surprisingly singing out in the open in the morning sun - probably very recently arrived.
Great crested Grebe Farmoor Great crested Grebe, Farmoor

8 April 2017

Superb light for photography early on, but little within reach of the lens!

Guessed right that the BN Grebe would have gone, so went for these instead. Not an easy bird to photo in Oxon...
