Oxon Bird Pics Autumn/Winter 2017/18

  Shovelers Shovelers,  Standlake Pit 60

30 March 2018

Some spring-time argy-bargy was going on briefly this morning, but mostly rather distant from the LL hide.
  Hawfinch Hawfinch, Ardington

24 March 2018

Back to Hawfinches while they are still with us! Unfortunately, I was watching a different Yew tree when a few birds started feeding under a much more distant one, about 30m away.

Of course as soon as I tried to get closer, they were off - and didn't return whilst I was there.

3 March 2018

Again a confiding individual, and only traces of snow in the background now.

3 March 2018

A more confiding bird than usual. The white in the background is rapidly thawing snow!

Wigeon Wigeon, Standlake Pit 60

3 March 2018

Just emerged onto the ice.
  Teal Teal, Standlake Pit 60

3 March 2018

Incoming! A wintry scene even though the thaw has hopefully set in.
Teal, Standlake Pit 60

3 March 2018

Distant group largely asleep on the ice. Note the good depth of field on this shot.

3 March 2018

There was a small group of Teal asleep fairly close to the hide, but these two swam in and I caught them just before they too followed suit.
   Oystercatcher Oystercatcher, Pit 60, Standlake

3 February 2018

Surely a sign of spring - a return of the breeding birds from last year on a most un-spring like day!
  Wigeon Wigeon, Pit 60, Standlake

3 February 2018

These birds were coming out onto the grass quite close to the Langley Lane hide, briefly. Probably connected with the rise in water levels recently.

3 February 2018

On a very grey and dank morning!

20 January 2018

While trying unsuccessfully to locate the Green-winged Teal that was seen earlier in the week, this bird suddenly appeared in the reeds in the front of the hide.

A pity it wasn't a Bearded or Penduline Tit!

Stonechat Kingstone Down Stonechat, Kingstone Down (by Ashdown House)

14 January 2018

A moderately obliging bird by the B4000 allowing the car to be used as a mobile hide.
  Hawfinch Hawfinch, Northmoor

6 January 2018

Surprisingly the sun came out briefly this morning, and the light was then superb for the Hawfinches in the trees around the church yard. This was a lucky photo which by chance caught the bird leaving its perch.
Hawfinch, Northmoor

6 January 2018

A lot of cropping on this one.

6 January 2018

A brief view of one on the yew where they were feeding.
  Hawfinch Hawfinch, Ardington

29 December 2017

About third time lucky - but distant views in tops of trees only.
Hawfinch Hawfinch, Ardington

29 December 2017

As above but even more distant.
  Redwing Redwing, Harwell Laboratory

9 December 2017

In a scattered flock feeding on the grass, this one suddenly came much closer than the rest to the car which I was using as a hide.
Hawfinch, Barnard Gate

2 December 2017

Having failed a couple of times to connect with the Hawfinch invasion, I was resolved to try to make this third time lucky.

In Oxon, the gate house at Barnard Gate seems to have been the most reliable location. However this record shot needed a 2+hr wait and even then views were very distant and obscured by a tree in front.

Little Egret Little Egret, Letcombe Bassett

4 November 2017

Back home after a month in Australia (more of which later). What a contrast!

Still nice to see the Little Egret remains around the cress beds.

21 September 2017

Great to get this rarity on my county list. Certainly more cooperative than the Osprey last week!

21 September 2017

By taking a large number of shots, I hoped that a few would be reasonably sharp, despite the constantly moving bird and water!

Another pic of this charming bird.

And another.
  Osprey, Radley Lakes

16 September 2017

Having flown from the tree below, this bird was visible for only 20sec, during which time it caught a fish and departed!
Osprey, Radley Lakes

16 September 2017

In a rather too distant tree!
Little Egret Letcombe Bassett Little Egret, Letcombe Bassett

9 September 2017

After an totally blank visit to Farmoor, it was good to find something in photo range. This bird was initially very close to the road, but flew a bit further away before I could get on to it.
  Shag Shag, Farmoor

2 September 2017

One of two on F2 from the causeway. A very rare bird in Oxon, but not the most exciting!

2 September 2017

See above. This one was very inactive. Just sitting on the causeway apparently dozing and allowing a very close approach.
